Message for Small Business Community and Congress: Keep Calm and Call a PEO
May 18, 2015, Alexandria, Virginia—The National Association of Professional Employer Organizations (NAPEO) is holding its annual PEO Capitol Summit in the Washington, D.C. area next week, and more than 200 PEO executives will be in town to discuss the pending IRS certification program for the PEO industry, issues surrounding the implementation of Obamacare, and other key topics. They’ll also spend a day on Capitol Hill meeting with lawmakers to discuss the key role PEOs play in helping small businesses grow and thrive. PEOs provide comprehensive HR, benefits, tax administration, and compliance services for small and mid-size businesses.
The tax extenders legislation signed by President Obama in late December of last year included provisions (known as the Small Business Efficiency Act, or SBEA) defining PEOs in the federal tax code and creating a voluntary certification program for PEOs within the IRS, which had been the industry’s top federal legislative priority for more than 15 years.
“Now that the SBEA has passed, some have said our work is done, but the reality is that just the opposite is true: Now is when the real work begins,” said NAPEO Chairman Brent Tilson, president and CEO of Tilson HR in Greenwood, IN. “There is no better time than right now for us to develop relationships with federal legislators or nurture existing relationships.”
“The economic data proves that small businesses using a PEO grow faster, have lower employee turnover, and are much less likely to go out of business, because PEOs allow business owners to focus on running a successful business rather than back-office administrative and HR tasks,” said NAPEO President and CEO Pat Cleary. “We want to share that data with lawmakers and make sure that they know about the critical role PEOs play in the success of many small businesses in their districts and states.”
