ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 21, 2024 -- The National Association of Professional Employer Organizations (NAPEO) today urged the Internal Revenue Service to quickly process legitimate Employee Retention Credit claims, following yesterday’s statement from IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel noting that 10%-20% of outstanding claims show “low risk” of fraud.
“By its own admission, the IRS is sitting on hundreds of thousands of legitimate claims from American small businesses that played by the rules established by Congress, keeping their doors open and Americans gainfully employed,” said NAPEO President and CEO Casey M. Clark. “This inaction is perpetuating a cycle of hardship for the backbone of the U.S. economy, and its impact is being felt in every community in America.”
“The IRS can significantly decrease the backlog and alleviate this financial strain for hundreds of thousands of American business owners by processing the consolidated returns of PEOs, which definitionally have already been subject to additional layers of scrutiny to ensure accuracy and eligibility.”
