ALEXANDRIA, Va., August 1, 2024 -- The National Association of Professional Employer Organizations (NAPEO) implored the IRS to clear the spiraling backlog of legitimate Employee Retention Credit (ERTC) claims following the Senate’s failed vote on the bipartisan tax package that included several ERTC provisions. “Today’s failed vote is yet another indicator that the IRS cannot wait for Congress to act on the ERTC,” said NAPEO President and CEO Casey Clark. “The IRS must expedite the processing of the hundreds of thousands of legitimate ERTC claims submitted on behalf of small businesses that played by the rules and are entitled to these funds.” Noting that the IRS has admitted 10%-20% of the more than one million outstanding claims are legitimate, Clark added, “weeding out fraud and processing legitimate claims aren’t mutually exclusive actions, and the IRS should stop penalizing American small businesses who played by the rules.” For more than three years, NAPEO has championed the cause of the thousands of small businesses that are still waiting for their much-needed ERTC funds and will continue to press the IRS until all legitimate claims are paid.
